Immigration. What does it mean when a country historically defined by diversity begins attacking its own source of pride? The majority of people in the United States are immigrants in some sense. However, people attempting to enter the country today face many more difficulties than in the past. Immigration legislation often threatens to make entry into the U.S. more challenging and creates harsher punishment for those here illegally.

There are between eleven and twelve million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Most come in search of jobs and hope to improve their situations. Others come for asylum or to rejoin their families. The legal process to enter the U.S. is long and arduous. For instance, it takes about 18 years for parents who are legal permanent residents to have their non-citizen children legally join them. Those who cannot wait dangerously to cross the border and live in a constant state of anxiety and fear. Deportation is an imminent threat.

Many questions arise in relation to this theme. What happens to children who did not choose to enter the U.S. illegally but whose parents brought them when they were young? Is it fair to penalize them and deport them to a country where they have little or no ties?

Drastic proposals are often driven by misunderstandings and fuel the public’s negative perception of immigrants. My body of work attempts to show the range of people that strive to construct a new life. Most immigrants are hard-working individuals willing to do the jobs many citizens will not consider. They pay far more in taxes than they receive in government benefits. Many are driven to make the dangerous journey to the U.S. because they see a possibility to improve life.

Upstate New York is a region once defined by booming industries and small, family farms. Now a part of the country in steep economic decline, those who remain are tough souls with a work ethic that reflects years of physical labor.

This project has spanned over six years and is an attempt to capture the remaining farms that once characterized the agricultural region. Small details such as the intimate relationships, visits from the local veterinarian and animals referred to by name contribute to the environment of family farms.

As new labor forces are brought from south and central America and many young people leave in search of a better future, the landscape of the area is changing dramatically. In addition, an influx of Amish farmers in search of cheap land offers a hopeful alternative for working the land.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) remains a strong part of Spanish culture. Religious processions fill the streets of cities and towns throughout Spain and vary greatly depending on the region. I witnessed my first processions in Valladolid and Leon and had a second opportunity to experience them in Madrid the following year. As an outsider coming from a place where the history of the Ku Klux Klan is taught in public schools, the processions resonate a somber, eerie resemblance.

To be a shepherd today is to live life in a way most people no longer choose. With so many now living in cities, the idea of dedicating every waking hour to caring for a flock that is your means of livelihood and survival grows more alien by the day. But there are people who for whom it is routine.

Through a program called Pastores por un 1 Dia, I had the chance to spend the day with Miguel, a young man in his 20s who dedicates his life to shepherding. A gangly lad whose skin already bore the marks of the years he had passed with his flock, he had a voice that trembled like the “baa” of a sheep and was very shy—understandable when your daily company is sheep, goats, and dogs.

Miguel can be found in Monreal de Ariza in Zaragoza, Spain where he rises with the sun each day to count his flock of 900 sheep and 46 goats. With the help of his two mastiffs, a Spanish dog specifically bred to work with sheep, and two smaller dogs, he spends the day moving the animals through fields as they graze.

Raised to live a life that many of us think of as obsolete, Miguel continues to practice one of the original forms of livestock management. In his quivering voice, he recounted that he had been herding sheep during the summer since he was five years old. Four years ago he decided to dedicate his life to shepherding year-round. Raised in a family that cared for animals, it seemed a natural decision despite the relentless hours and conditions he faces in good health and bad.
